As I have mentioned, we have many boulders and stones all over our land. I used to curse them when I was gardening, because they often got in my way and were too heavy to move. Now, I garden around them, and they have become a part of the garden and landscape.
Rocks or stones have been sacred for thousands of years. In his book, The Sacred Earth, Brian Leigh Molyneaux says that stones are often thought of in many cultures as “supernatural beings.” He mentions, “stones themselves are widely believed to have sacred or magical properties, and prayers or offerings are often made at prominent or strangely formed outcrops associated with spirit energy.” (p. 67) The Ayers Rock in Australia is a huge mound of sandstone and is known to be a sacred site to the aboriginal people there.
There always seems to be a spiritual energy around our rocks and boulders. In fact, we buried three of our pets next to a large boulder on our hill. I’ll point it out when I videotape the walk up the hill in spring to determine the location for the labyrinth. When I get back into the garden, I will think of these spiritual beings and offer a prayer to their spirit energy.
